Mops might be for cleaning, but they need cleaning, too

You know that mopping your floors is essential to keeping your home or business clean. However, many may not know the proper ways to keep their mops clean. Without proper upkeep, well-intended moppers are spreading more dirt and grime around than what was there before. Follow these steps below to learn how to maintain your mop, prevent odors, and get the best clean you can.

• Wash the Head After Each Use

This simple step is a key aspect of maintaining your mop. The easiest way to do this is by thoroughly rinsing your mop head off in the sink to remove the larger pieces of dirt, and then running it through the washing machine. Be sure to put the washing machine on its hottest setting to kill all of the remaining germs. If your mop head is not washing machine safe, you can soak it in a bucket in a mixture of hot water and bleach. After soaking, rinse & ring out the mop head until the water running from it is clear and no bleach remains.

• Let it Dry

Like a sponge, be sure to let your mop head dry completely to prevent lingering odors. An easy way to do this is by placing the mop head in the sun outdoors.

• Provide a Deeper Clean Frequently

Even by following these steps, after a few uses your mop head will most likely begin to smell foul. A way to get rid of this odor is by creating a cleaning solution for it to soak in. Mix together one cup of white vinegar (or three percent hydrogen peroxide) and one gallon of hot water. Let the mop head soak for a significant amount of time before ringing it out and letting in dry in the sun.

• Store it Properly

Be sure that you are storing your mop upside-down in a dry area. Keep the mop head elevated to prevent it from touching more dirt or anything that might be spilled on the floor.

• Still Not Enough?

If the mop head odor does not go away after sufficiently washing with bleach or vinegar, it is time to get a new one. Always be sure to replace your mop heads after a few months to keep your home or office sanitary.
